WINONA, Minn. —
Wylie Ferron (Waconia, Minn.) scored a team-high 15 points, but the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team could not cool off St. Olaf from behind the 3-point line, as the Oles drained 11 treys in handing the Cardinals an 81-50 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Skoglund Center Wednesday evening.
Ferron shot 50 percent from the field (6 of 12) — including 1-for-2 from behind the 3-point line — and added a pair of free throws en route to his 15-point effort.
As a team, the Cardinals shot 41 percent from the field (20-for-49), but made just 3 of 14 3-pointers. On the flip side, St. Olaf made 32 of 75 field goal attempts — and the Oles were most lethal from 3-point range, raining in 11 of 24 3-pointers in sealing their seventh straight win.
Leading by one, 10-9, St. Olaf went on a 14-2 run to push their lead to 24-11 and would lead by as many as 18, 41-23, before settling for a 43-27 halftime advantage. The Oles continued to keep the Cardinals at bay over the second half, outscoring SMU 38-23 to secure the win.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, as SMU entertains Concordia in a 3 p.m. conference game at the SMU Gym.
