NAPERVILLE, Ill. — It must have felt like Saint Mary's University of Minnesota volleyball coach
Mike Lester and his Cardinals had stepped into a time machine when they took the court for Day 2 of the North Central Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament.
The calendar may have read Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014 – but it easily could have been the weekend of Aug.-29-30, when the Cardinals kicked off their season at the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic.
Two of the Cardinals' four opponents during that season-opening home tournament were North Park and Wartburg-the same two teams Saint Mary's would face on Saturday.
With the same final scores—but not quite the same outcomes.
Which was good news for Lester and the Cardinals.
For the second time in as many meetings, the Cardinals—coming off s huge 3-1 win over 25th-ranked University of Chicago on Friday—made quick work of North Park, posting their second straight sweep of the Vikings with a with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-10 dismantling.
And for the second straight meeting, the Cardinals and Wartburg played to a 3-0 decision—only this time it was Saint Mary's doing the sweeping, bouncing the Knights 25-22, 25-19, 25-23 to complete a 3-1 run through the two-day tournament.
Alex Peterson led the way for the Cardinals against North Park, collecting a team-best 12 kills, while hitting .346.
Tayler MacVey accounted for 35 of the team's 43 assists, and
Jordan Wolfe posted a team-leading 11 digs, one more than teammate
Lex Krogstad.
Jenna Sullivan delivered a team-best 15 kills and 20 digs against Wartburg, leading three Cardinals with 10 or more kills.
Molly Grover chipped in 11 kills, while
Macki Fadness finished with 10.
Brittney Hanson dished out a career-high 27 assists and Krogstad posted a season-high 28 digs.
Sullivan, who finished with a team-high 45 kills and added 52 digs in four tournament matches, and Grover (25 kills, seven blocks) were named to the all-tournament team.
The Cardinals (15-8 overall) return to conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Hamline's Hutton Arena in St. Paul, Minn., for a 7 p.m. MIAC match against the Pipers.
