EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — For the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota volleyball team, the strategy against St. Scholastica Saturday at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational seemed pretty obvious—take the Saints to more than three sets and a victory was virtually assured.
After all, St. Scholastica entered tournament play having won 11 times this season—all by 3-0 scores.
Unfortunately for the Saint Mary's, taking a set off the Saints was not in the cards, as Saint Mary's became St. Scholastica's 10th 3-0 victim.
The Saints came out flying, beating Saint Mary's 25-17 in the opening set, before completing the sweep with 25-21 and 25-22 wins in the second and third sets, respectively.
Jenna Sullivan (Woodbury, Minn.)—who recorded a career-high 18 kills in the Cardinals' match against Northwestern (Minn.) Friday evening—and
Mary Nordick (Plymouth, Minn.) paced the Cardinal offense with 10 kills each.
Brittney Hanson (Janesville, Iowa)—who, like Sullivan, had a career night on Friday, dishing out 42 assists against UW-Eau Claire—finished with 36 assists vs. St. Scholastica and Sullivan boasted a team-leading nine digs.
The Cardinals (16-11 overall) begin their final conference push on Wednesday, hosting St. Catherine in the first of four consecutive home MIAC matches to close out the regular season. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at the Saint Mary's Gym.
