Cardinals can't overcome early goal in 1-0 loss

DECORAH, Iowa — For 89 minutes Wednesday evening, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team gave nationally ranked Luther all it could handle

Unfortunately, it was that other minute of the 90-minute contest—the first minute of the game, to be exact—that proved to be the Cardinals' undoing.

Luther netted the game's only goal just 47 seconds into the first half, as the Norse dealt the Cardinals a 1-0 setback in Saint Mary's final nonconference game of the season.

Jon Gednalske scored what proved to be the game-winner off a corner kick by J.W. Slauson, directing a shot past Cardinal goalkeeper Nate Levy (Bryon, Minn.) to give the Norse the early 1-0 lead.

Levy was perfect after that Gednalske's goal, stopping the last eight Norse shots he faced, while Peter Wright kept the Cardinals from scoring the equalizer, stopping all three Saint Mary's shots in recording the shut out.

The Cardinals (5-9-1 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, as Saint Mary's hosts Saint John's in a 4 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
