WINONA, Minn. — If Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer coach
Neil Cassidy had any fingernails left after his team's last two games, they're gone now.
The nail-biting, emotional rollercoaster the Cardinals have been on of late continued Tuesday evening against Buena Vista
The ride began last Wednesday, when Saint Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead, only to have Gustavus respond with three unanswered tallies in a 3-3 double-overtime deadlock.
Three days later, the ride took another heartbreaking dip, as the Cardinals saw Concordia—one of the top teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference—score the game-tying goal with 12 minutes left in regulation and the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime in a 2-1 Cobber win.
And on Tuesday, Cassidy and Co, were back to gnawing at their fingernails, as Saint Mary's headed to overtime—again..
Fortunately, this time around the end result was much ore pleasant, as
Emma Schaefer scored on a penalty kick late in the first overtime to lift the Cardinals to a 2-1 nonconference victory over the Beavers at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Cardinals rallied from a one-goal, first-half deficit, getting the equalizer on a goal by
Caroline Blackwood, who headed a corner kick off the foot of
Emily Loof past BVU goalkeeper Caroline Maher 15 minutes into the second half.
And the score would remain tied until Schaefer's PK game-winner in the 97th minute.
Victoria Perez earned her first collegiate win in goal fo Saint Mary's, stopping three of the four shots she faced.
The Cardinals (4-6-1 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a 1 p.m. contest against St. Catherine.
