WINONA, Minn. —The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team entered Thursday's nonconference game against Simpson red-hot—the Cardinals had won two straight, outscoring their two opponents 5-1 in thr process.
Unfortunately for coach
Pete Watkins, that sizzling offense went into a deep-freeze against the Storm, as Simpson's smothering defense limited the Cardinals to just one shot on goal in handing Saint Mary's a 1-0 setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the game's opening 45 minutes—thanks in large part to the play of Cardinal starting goalkeeper
Joey Petrich, who made four first-half saves, including a pair from point-blank range.
Simpson finally broke the ice in the 67th minute, as Josh Harry beat
Zach Satton—on in relief of Petrich—with what proved to be the game's only goal.
The Cardinals (5-6-1 overall)are off until next Wednesday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Northfield, Minn., for a 4 p.m. MIAC game against St. Olaf.
