Scots' 2-goal 2nd half top Cardinals in finale

WINONA, Minn. — Bus troubles forced Macalester to show up late for its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team Saturday afternoon.

Thanks to a two-goal Macalester second half that erased an early Saint Mary's lead, the Cardinals probably wished the Scots would not have shown up at all.

Macalester, needing a win to keep its slim conference playoff hopes alive, got goals from Bijanca Clark and Hannah Walker to lift the Scots to a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's at Ochrymowycz Field.

The first half proved to be a true test of quality over quantity, as Macalester held a 9-1 advantage in shots attempted, but the Cardinals certainly made the most of their one shot.

Katie Slaght (Marshall, Mich.) picked the ideal time to net her first goal in a Cardinal uniform, as the junior corralled a free kick off the foot of Aubrie Cornell and beat Macalester goalkeeper Emma Toomer for the 1-0 Saint Mary's advantage—an advantage it maintained heading into the halftime break.

The Scots, however, didn't waste a lot of time getting the equalizer, as Bijanca Clark beat Cardinal goalkeeper Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) six minutes into the second half. Walker then scored what proved to be the game-winner midway through the half, netting an unassisted tally in the 77th minute.

Halling, making her final collegiate start, finished with four saves, while Toomer stopped one of the two Cardinal shots she faced in posting the win for the Scots.
