McGlasson scores 2 as Cardinals bounce Cobbers

BLAINE, Minn. — It took the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team nearly four periods to get its offense on track, but once they did, they were unstoppable.

After being shut out by Augsburg 2-0 in their season opener on Friday, the Cardinals went another 18:54 before finally finding the back of the net. Over the next 41:06, Saint Mary's would score three more times—including two from Jed McGlasson (Kenai, Alaska)—as the Cardinals dropped Concordia 4-2 Sunday in the third day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hockey Showcase.

The Cobbers broke through first, midway through the first period, as Jon Grebosky rifled a wrist shot through traffic that beat Saint Mary's goalie Phil Heinle (York, Pa.) to the short side.

Concordia's lead did not last long, however, as Chad Cesarz (Jackson, Mich.) got the Cardinals on the board at 18:54, beating Cobber goalie Jordyn Kaufer for his first goal in a Saint Mary's uniform to make it a 1-1 game after the opening 20 minutes.

Kaufer and Heinle took center stage in the second period, as the duo combined to stop a combined 16 of the 17 shots they faced.

Unfortunately, the one that did find the back of the net came off the stick of CC's Jordie Bancroft, as the junior forward beat Heinle with 2:09 remaining to give the Cobbers a 2-1 advantage heading into the final stanza.

And that final stanza was all Saint Mary's.

McGlasson scored his first of the season at the 15:25 mark to pull the Cardinals even at 2-2, and Martin Gruse (Trenton, Mich.) gave Saint Mary's its first lead of the game—and the season—three minutes later. McGlasson would add his second of the season, and empty-netter with five seconds remaining, to ice the win for the Cardinals.

Heinle finished with 22 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Kaufer made 25 saves for the Cobbers.

The Cardinals kick off conference play next weekend, traveling to St. Thomas for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, before returning home for their home opener at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
