WINONA, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University of Minnesota seniors
Mary DeBartolo (Chicago, Ill.),
Breanna Peterson (Macomb, Mich.) and
Mackenzie Klimek (Hastings, Minn.), St. Catherine has been a thorn in their sides for their entire collegiate women's hockey careers.
Until Saturday afternoon, that is.
The Cardinals—thanks to
Rory Petrisin's (High Bridge, N.J.) goal with 12 seconds remaining in overtime—finally gave the senior trio their first win over St. Catherine, beating the Wildcats 3-2 at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
"That was a big win for us," said Saint Mary's coach
Terry Mannor, whose team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Wildcats in Friday's opening game of their two-game conference series. "We played well enough to come way with two wins this weekend—so it was nice to get this win today."
The Cardinals got on the board first, scoring the only goal of the first period, when
Macki Fadness (Eau Claire, Wis.) netted her first of the season at 15:15.
The second period belonged to the Wildcats, who got goals from Maddy Zastrow and Jordan Solheim to take a 2-1 advantage into the third period.
It was an advantage the Wildcats made stand up until the game's final two minutes—when Fadness came calling again. The Cardinal junior netted her second of the game with just 1:25 remaining in regulation to pull Saint Mary's even and force the overtime period.
And set up Petrisin's heroics.
Marah Shields (Milford, Mich.) finished with 16 saves for the Cardinals, while St. Catherine goalie Kristen Pechacek recorded 31 saves in goal for the Wildcats.
Saint Mary's (3-2-1 MIAC, 3-5-1 overall) are now off until Jan. 2-3, when they square off against UW-Eau Claire in a pair of nonconference games. Saint Mary's hosts the Blugolds in a 5 p.m. contest on Jan. 2 at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena, before heading to Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire, Wis., for the 7 p.m. rematch a day later.
