And the Cardinals needed every one of those 20 points, as SMU held off a furious Augsburg rally in the second half to beat the Auggies 54-51 at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis, Minn.

January 19, 2013: It's been said that defense wins championships, and SMU has certainly taken that adage to heart. The Cardinals allowed Augsburg an additional five minutes and still held the Auggies six points under their season average, as SMU picked up its fourth straight win with a 59-53 overtime victory at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis, Minn.
February 16, 2013: It took 12 minutes, but the Cardinals quickly put any fears coach Mandy Pearson may have had about any mental letdown to rest, as SMU rode a 22-10 run to end the first half and held off a late Auggie rally to post a 68-64 victory at the SMU Gym.

Saint Mary's is now off until Thursday, when they will host a semifinal-round game of the MIAC Tournament at the SMU Gym. The No. 1-seeded Cardinals will take on the lowest remaining seed in the tournament following Tuesday's tournament-openers. … Saturday's game is the regular-season finale for Augsburg.

Where They Stand:
With their convincing win over Hamline on Wednesday, the Cardinals locked up at least a share of the MIAC regular-season title, as well as the conference's No. 1 seed — and home court advantage — throughout the upcoming MIAC Tournament.  A win over Augsburg would give the Cardinals' the regular-season crown outright. Saint Mary's, St. Thomas, Concordia, Bethel and St. Olaf have all locked up MIAC Tournament berths, with Gustavus (10-11), Saint Benedict (9-12) and Augsburg (9-12) all battling for the sixth and final spot.
