DECORAH, Iowa — It was a homecoming of sorts for Saint Mary's University track and field coach
Niels Anderson, as the first-year Cardinal coach brought his squad to his alma mater for Saturday's Luther Open.
And the Cardinals made it a memorable day for their head coach.
Led by
Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.),
Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) and Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.), SMU collected six first-place finishes and one fieldhouse record.
Schommer, who broke the school record in the 60 at the warren Bowlus Invitational last weekend, was back to her record-breaking self on Saturday, shattering the Luther Fieldhouse record in the 300, breaking the tape in a winning time of 43.52.
Schommer also won the 55 (7.55), while Booker swept the throwing events, winning the weight throw in 14.68 meters and the shot put in 10.75 meters.
Becca Iten (Fridley, Minn.) also collected a first for the Cardinal women, clearing the bar at 2.80 meters in the pole vault, while
Rebecca Krueger (Ashland, Wis.) was second in the 400 (1:05.73), and
Bridget Hayes (Chicago, Ill.) and
Josie Moreno (Cicero, Ill.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the mile with tiems of 5:52.57 and 5:54.41.
Ortman led the way for the SMU men, winning the triple jump with a mark of 12.48 meters, while Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Minn.), Jacob Hagen-Erickson (Austin, Minn.), Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) and Alex Davis (Champaign, Ill.) all chipped in third-place efforts.
Kircher notched a throw of 14.00 meters in the weight throw, while Wiggert posted a throw of 12.63 in the shot put and Hagen-Erickson uncorked a leap of 5.68 meters in the long jump. Davis earned his third in the 400, where he crossed the finish line in 54.10. Gabe Thiel (Elgin, Minn.) and Jacob Paulson (Polson, Mont.) chipped in fourth- and fifth-place efforts in the 300, recording time of 28.83 and 29.31, respectively.
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, traveling to Superior, Wis., to take part in the UW-Superior Border Battle.
