All-MIAC Men's Basketball Team
WINONA, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University's
Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.), there was no sophomore slump this season.
The Cardinal forward — coming off a freshman campaign that included a spot on the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's All-First-Year Team — picked up right where he left off for the Cardinal men's basketball team this season.
And for the second year in a row, Swiggum was rewarded for his efforts, being named honorable-mention All-MIAC, the conference office announced Thursday.
Swiggum put together a stellar sophomore campaign, leading the team in scoring (307 points, 12.3 ppg) and rebounding (183 rebounds, 7.3 rpg), while also chipping in 17 3-pointers, 14 assists, 13 steals and two blocks.
Swiggum scored a season-high 23 points against Gustavus on Feb. 15 — one point shy of his career-best — and eclipsed the 20-point barrier twice this season. He also boasted a team-best five double-doubles, and his 14 rebounds against Bethany Lutheran on Dec. 11 equaled his career best.
Augsburg senior Dan Kornbaum was named the Joe Hutton Player of the Year, while Alex Schmitt of Saint John's earned the Sixth Man of the Year honor, and MIAC playoff champion St. Olaf coach Dan Kosmoski was tabbed MIAC Coach of the Year.
As part of the conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the seventh annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for men's basketball, which included SMU's
Aaron Romportl (Stillwater, Minn.).
