GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams have just one home outdoor meet each season — one chance for the Cardinals to shine in front of their home fans.
And shine they did Saturday afternoon.
Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) continued her assault on the Cardinal record books with her third school record of the year to pace the SMU women, while Jovan Newsome (Glendale Heights, Ill.) cracked the SMU all-time top five list in the 5,000 to pace the Saint Mary's ment at the non-team-scored event.
Stolz, who set a new school record in the indoor 5,000 and had broken her own school record in winning the 3,000 steeplechase two weeks ago, was at it again Saturday, re-breaking that steeplechase mark with a second-place time of 11:34.86. Stolz was one of three Cardinals to finish in the top 10 in the steeplechase, as
Clare Siska (Rochester, Minn.) finished 5th (12:23.34) and
Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) was 8th (12:39.42).
Abi Osborne (Winthrop, Minn.) added a third-place effort in the javelin with a throw of 33.74, while
Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) was 6th in 200 (27.19) and eight in the 100 (13.37).
Shauna Stephens (Norwood, Minn.) and
Rebecca Krueger (Ashland, Wis.) also chipped in top 10 performances placing eighth in the 5,000 (20:32.95) and 10th in the 200 (27.49), respectively.
Newsom cruised to a third-place time of 15:38.24 in moving into the Cardinals' all-time top five list, with
John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.) chipping in a seventh-place time 16:31.43 in the same event. Alex Zappa clocked a fifth-place time of 10:33.14 in the steeplechase, while
Jacob Hagen-Erickson (Austin, Minn.) was sixth in long jump (6.11 meters) and
Zach Palma (Washburn, Wis.) was seventh in the triple jump (11.84 meters).
Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) posted an eighth in the triple jump (11.76 meters) and a ninth in long jump (5.93 meters), while
Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) was 10th in both the hammer (43.91 meters) and shot put (12.68 meters).
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, taking part in both the St. Thomas Tommie Twilight and the Concordia-St. Paul Twilight in St. Paul, Minn.
