DECORAH, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and Luther women's soccer teams headed into Wednesday's nonconference showdown boasting high-powered offenses.
The Cardinals were coming off a seven-goal outburst in a 7-0 win over UW-Superior last Saturday, while the Norse buried six goals in a 6-2 rout of UW-Stevens Point last Sunday.
And the offensive fireworks continued Wednesday evening.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was Luther's offense that remained in high gear, as the Norse scored a pair of goals in each half in shutting out Saint Mary's 4-0.
Ellie Bunz and Erin Wilson each scored their third goals of the season in a five-minute span midway through the first half, while Melisse Chasse and Erika Balk chipped in second-half tallies as the Norse pushed its season-opening winning streak to five straight.
Victoria Perez (Upland, Calif.) finished with five saves in goal for Saint Mary's, while Lauren Thormodsgard and Molly Hilgart combined on a four-save shutout in goal for the Norse.
Saint Mary's (2-2-0 overall) is now off until Tuesday, when the Cardinals kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Augsburg at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis, Minn.
