Cardinals fall to Auggies in conference opener

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Talk about a tale of two halves—and making the most of your opportunities.

The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team boasted a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal in the first half of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener against Augsburg.

And the Cardinals made the most of those first-half offensive opportunities, as Jared Wolt (Farmington, Minn.) scored his second goal of the season to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 advantage through the game's opening 45 minutes.

Over the final 45 minutes, however, it was Augsburg that proved to be the opportunistic one, as the Auggies scored on two of their first three shots in the second half—and three times overall—in handing the Cardinals a 3-2 setback at Edor Nelson Field.

Wolt broke a 0-0 deadlock with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, taking a feed from Nate Blank (Timnath, Colo.) and beating Auggie goalkeeper Nick Lenertz.

The Auggies wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, scoring 36 seconds in on a goal by Tanner McCarthy, and 12 minutes later, Ben Henry gave Augsburg its first lead of the game with his second goal of the season.

Cody Balogh (Batavia, Ill.) pulled the Cardinals even in the 83rd minute on his second of the season—off an assist from Jim Dreshar (Hugo, Minn.)—but the tie lasted less than two minutes, as Ngochinyan Ollor beat Saint Mary's goalkeeper Zach Satton (Tehachapi, Calif.) with the eventual game-winner.

Satton finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Lenertz recorded three saves for the Auggies.

Saint Mary's (0-1-0 MIAC, 2-2-1 overall) returns home to Ochrymowycz Field on Saturday, as the Cardinals host Carleton in a 1 p.m. conference game.
