NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team erupted for a pair of goals three minutes apart during the second half of Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Carleton.
That was the good news.
The bad news … the Cardinals were trailing Carleton 4-0 at the time.
Carleton scored three times in the game's opening 40 minutes, and added a fourth tally 15 minutes into the second half—before the Cardinals finally got their offense on track—as the Knights handed Saint Mary's a 4-2 setback at Bell Field.
Megan King broke the scoreless deadlock in the 26th minute, scoring her sixth of the season. Ava Lewis would push that lead to 3-0 with back-to-back goals three minutes apart midway through the opening half, as the Knights took a 3-0 advantage into the halftime break.
Bailey Ulbricht added her first of the season in the 60th minute, before Saint Mary's
Bridgett Leverich (Oswego, Ill.) netted her first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute and
Emily Loof (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tallied her team-leading sixth on a penalty kick three minutes later to round out the scoring.
Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) finished with seven saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Mikayla Coulombe recorded four saves for the Knights.
The Cardinals (0-2-0 MIAC, 2-4-0 overall) are back in action on Tuesday, stepping out of conference play for a 7 p.m. contest against Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, Minn.
