WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams got back into the competitive spirit on Saturday, as the Cardinals kicked off the 2015 portion of their schedule at the non-team-scored Luther Sprint Invitational.
"It was a good meet to start the second half of our schedule," said Saint Mary's coach
Eric Lindquist. "We had some good swims—and it got the competitive juices flowing a bit."
Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) clocked a time of 30.83 to place eighth in 50 breaststroke and touched the wall in 1:09.21 to finish 10th in the 100 breaststroke, while
Zac Finkelstein posted a seventh in the 50 freestyle (23.48) and an eighth in the 50 butterfly (26.07).
P. J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) and
Jimmy Lynch (Chicago, Ill.) posted times of 2:06.15 and 2:17.35 to finish 10th and 11th, respectively in the 200 freestyle
On the women's side, Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) posted a fourth-place finish in the 50 breaststroke, stopping the clock in 34:35, while Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.) chipped in a sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:03.17) to highlight a very busy day for the Cardinal freshman. Galewski also placed 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:07.02) and 12th in the 500 freestyle (6:00.21).
Maarit Christianson (Cottage Grove, Minn.) chipped in a 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.57) and Janelle Mueller (Lewiston, Minn.) finished 10th in the one-meter diving (323.70).
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, hosting the Saint Mary's Alumni Meet.
