Cardinals fall short in 4-1 loss to #7 Adrian

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team did something Adrian's last two opponents couldn't—score a goal.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, one goal was not enough against the seventh-ranked Bulldogs, who scored two goals in both the second and third periods in handing Saint Mary's a 4-1 nonconference setback Saturday afternoon at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

"They are good—very good," said Saint Mary's coach Terry Mannor, whose team was coming off a 2-2 overtime tie against Lake Forest on Friday, while Adrian blanked fifth-ranked Gustavus 1-0. "I thought we played a pretty solid game—you have to tip your cap to (Adrian), they are ranked No. 7 in the country for a reason."

After a scoreless first period—thanks to a 12-save effort by Cardinal goalie Marah Shields (Milford, Mich.)—the Bulldogs broke the ice six minutes into the second period on Michelle Jones' third goal of the season. Kristin Lewicki pushed Adrian's lead to 2-0 at 15:36 of the middle period, and Hannah McGowan made it 3-0 17 seconds into the final frame.

Lindsay Paschke (New Prague, Minn.) got the Cardinals on the board with her third off the season—off assists from Kassie Lien (Grantsburg, Wis.) and Katie LeTourneau (White Bear Lake, Minn.)—but the Bulldogs would push their lead back to three goals four minutes later when Logan Taylor beat Shields for her seventh of the season.

Shields was busy between the pipes for the Cardinals, finishing with 35 saves—one shy of her career high—while Adrian goalie Jade Walsh stopped 10 of the Cardinals' 11 shots.

The Cardinals (5-6-2 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend, traveling to Blaine, Minn., for a 7 p.m. game against Bethel on Friday, before returning home for the 2 p.m. rematch with the Royals at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena a day later.
