Cardinals pick up 2nd 4-1 win over Blugolds

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — There were plenty of firsts in the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team's 4-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire Friday evening.

And the "first" parade continued in the teams' nonconference rematch.

Twenty-four hours after scoring four goals for the first time this season—getting a first collegiate two-goal game (Jamie Henderson) and a pair of season-first goals (Kassie Lien, Jane Hannula)—the Cardinals picked up right where they left off on Saturday.

Fueled by Mandy Sailor's (Ramsey, Minn.) first collegiate goal—in the first period—the Cardinals completed their sweep of the Blugolds, posting a second straight 4-1 victory at Hobbs Ice Arena.

Sailor jump-started the Cardinals' offense at 14:56 of the opening period, taking a feed from Breanna Peterson (Macomb, Mich.) and beating Blugold goalie Paige Turner for collegiate goal No. 1.

The two teams traded second-period goals—Saint Mary's coming on a rebound goal by Lien at 17:05 and UW-Eau Claire's off the stick of Sam Knutson with 21 seconds remaining—giving the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage heading into the game's final 20 minutes.

The Cardinals—with Peterson leading the way—dominated the third period, as Peterson scored the Cardinals' third goal at 8:16 (her first of the season), before picking up an assist on Lindsay Pashke's (New Prague, Minn.) second of the season five minutes later.

Shields picked up the win in goal for the Cardinals, collecting 28 saves, while Turner made 21 saves for the Blugolds.

The Cardinals, who improved to 5-5-1 overall with their third straight win, are back in action next weekend, hosting Lake Forest and Adrian in a pair of nonconference games at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. Saint Mary's and Lake Forest square off at 3 p.m. on Friday, before the Cardinals host Adrian in a 2 p.m. nonconference showdown a day later.
