Cardinals can't cool hot-shooting BU in loss

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) scored a team-high 13 points and added five rebounds, but it was not enough to off-set the double-double of Bethel's Kyle Zimmerman, as the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's basketball team dropped a 79-59 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision Saturday at Robertson Center.

Bethel scored the game's first nine points—including a pair of 3-pointers by Kyle von Schmidt-Pauli—and the Royals never relinquished the lead, building their lead to 16, 42-26, at the break, and holding a four-point, 37-33, scoring advantage over the game's final 20 minutes to ice the victory.

The Cardinals shot 47 percent from the field (23-for-49)—including five 3-pointer—and got a 6-for-10 effort from Swiggum, who led the team in scoring for the third time in the last four games.

Zimmerman finished with a game-high 25 points on 11 of 13 shooting and a 3-for-5 effort from the free throw line, while Bridgeport Tusler chipped in 18 points, and von Schmidt-Pauli and Brycen Wojita posted 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Cardinals (1-12 MIAC, 3-14 overall) step out of conference play for the final time on Monday, heading to Chicago, Ill., for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Illinois Institute of Technology.
