Scots score twice in 2nd half to drop Cardinals

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team headed into Tuesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with Macalester having surrendered the game's first goal in the opening 11 minutes of their last two contests.

So the Cardinals got a little defensive against the Scots.

Saint Mary's held Macalester off the scoreboard for the entire first half—and the first nine minutes of the second.

Unfortunately, Macalester would find the back of the net twice in the game's final 36 minutes in handing Saint Mary's a 2-0 setback.

Aubrie Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) did her part to keep the game scoreless through the game's opening 45 minutes, as the Cardinal goalkeeper made three saves, while Macalester netminder Emma Toomer did not have to make a save in the first half.

And Cornell was even busier in the second half, stopping the Scots' first four shots on goal—before Lydia Chodosh's broke the scoreless deadlock with her first goal of the season at 54:35.

Natalie Prescott would give Macalester a little breathing room scoring her first goal of the season at 73:57.

Cornell closed out her busy night in goal with a season-high 12 saves—marking the third time this season the Cardinal junior has stopped 10 or more shots in a game. Cornell made 11 saves against Gustavus on Sept. 30, while stopping 10 shots against Concordia on Oct. 3.

The Cardinals (2-5-0 MIAC, 4-9-0 overall) return home on Saturday, hosting St. Olaf in a 1 p.m. conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
