ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team entered Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against Macalester looking to break out of a mid-season offensive funk.
In their last five games, the Cardinals had mustered just two goals—including the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over Bethany Lutheran a week ago.
Unfortunately for coach
Pete Watkins, the mid-season offensive hibernation continued against the unbeaten Scots, as Macalester held Saint Mary's off the scoreboard in dealing the Cardinals a 3-0 conference setback.
Charlie Spurr got the Scots on the board in the game's 24th minute, netting his team-leading seven goal of the season, and Macalester would make it 2-0 before halftime, as Danny Baumann found the back of the net with just 52 seconds remaining before the break.
Macalester didn't waste any time padding its lead was the teams returns to the field, either, as Austin Burrows beat Cardinal goalkeeper
Evan Claffy (Joliet, Ill.) just three minutes into the second half.
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) took the loss in goal for the Cardinals, allowing two goals on four shots, while Levy came on in relief to start the second half, finishing with one save.
The Cardinals (0-5-2 MIAC, 4-7-2 overall) return home to Ochrymowycz Field on Saturday, hosting St. Olaf in a 3 p.m. conference game.
