Tommies deal Cardinals 1-0 conference setback

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team faced a rather daunting task Saturday afternoon, as they squared off against St. Thomas.

After all, the Tommies entered the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown unbeaten in their last seven games—having outscored those seven opponents 12-4.

The Cardinals' defense did its part, limiting the high-octane St. Thomas offense to just one first-half goal.

Unfortunately for coach Neil Cassidy and the Cardinals, one goal was all it took, as St. Thomas made their first-half tally stand up in beating Saint Mary's 1-0.

Mallory DeBoom accounted for the game's only goal, as the Tommie freshman netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the game's 14th minute off an assist from Emily Michaelson.

DeBoom's early first-half goal would be the only Tommie shot to elude Cardinal goalkeeper Aubrie Cornell (Columbia, Mo.), who finished with seven saves, while UST's Tarynn Theilig stopped both Saint Mary's shots she faced in recording the shutout.

The Cardinals (3-6-0 MIAC, 6-10-0 overall)—who had their two-game winning streak snapped with the loss—return home on Wednesday, hosting St. Catherine in a 7 p.m. MIAC game at Ochrymowycz Field.
