MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team has been working a little overtime of late.
No, make that a lot of overtime.
The Cardinals headed into their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup against Concordia having played three straight overtime games—a 3-2 OT victory over Simpson and a pair of double-overtime 0-0 ties against Bethel and Gustavus.
And it appeared like Saint Mary's was on a collision course with yet another overtime Saturday, as the Cardinals and Cobbers were deadlocked at 1-1 late in the second half.
Unfortunately, a first—or second—10-minute overtime would not be needed, as Concordia's Spencer Lancaster scored in the game's final minute in lead CC to a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals.
The Cobbers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Matthew Fulks beat Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Evan Claffy (Joliet, Ill.) in the game's second minute.
The goal snapped a streak of 229 consecutive shutout minutes by Claffy—who had stopped 20 straight shots and was in goal for both shutout victories over Bethel and Gustavus, while also getting the win in relief against Simpson on Sept. 23.
While the Cobbers struck early in the first half, the Cardinals waited until late to knot the game at 1-1, as
Chris Trussel (Wenatchee, Wash.) scored his second goal of the season with less than 10 minutes remaining.
Concordia took a page out of the Cardinals' late-scoring playbook in netting the game-winner, as Lancaster tallied his first collegiate goal to help the Cobbers snap Saint Mary's three-game unbeaten streak.
Claffy finished with five saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Cobber goalkeeper Ben Glogoza recorded six saves.
The Cardinals (0-3-2 MIAC, 3-5-2) step out of conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Mankato, Minn., for a 6 p.m. nonconference matchup against Bethany Lutheran.
