NORTHFIELD, Minn. — It wasn't quite the season finale Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer coach
Neil Cassidy was hoping for.
In fact, if Cassidy were to write a final chapter to this year's season, it would be the exact opposite of the one the Cardinals wrote Saturday afternoon against Carleton.
The Knights scored four unanswered goals—including three in the first half—and the Cardinals could not recover in dropping a 5-1 decision at Bell Field.
Annika Martensson got the Knights off and running, netting her fifth of the season in the game's 23rd minute. Less than six minutes later, Ava Lewis made it 2-0 with her eighth of the season. Diana Tyutyunnyk made it 3-0 before halftime, then tallied her second of the game seven minutes into the second period to push the Carleton advantage to 4-0.
Kelli Harstad (Hampton, Minn.) and
Caroline Blackwood (Norwalk, Ohio)—two of six Cardinals playing their final collegiate game—finally got the Cardinals on the board in the 82nd minute, as Harstad took a feed from Blackwood and beat Carleton goalkeeper Elaine Sundberg for her first goal of the season.
The momentum did not last long, however, as Carleton regained its four-goal cushion on a goal by Madeline Topf with 3:11 remaining in regulation.
Aubrie Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) finished with five saves in goal for the Cardinals, who closed out the season 3-8-0 in conference play and 6-12-0 overall.
