Kaiser, Swiggum pace Cardinals' win over MLC

NEW ULM, Minn. — The last time the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's basketball team faced Martin Luther, Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) and Connor Kaiser (Rockland, Wis.) enjoyed career nights.

Swiggum equaled his career high with 24 points, while Kaiser chipped in a career-best 22, as the Cardinals rolled to an 83-73 nonconference win at the Saint Mary's Gym.

Tuesday evening, the two teams squared off again—and Kaiser and Swiggum were at it again

Kaiser recorded his second straight career night against the Knights—equaling his output of a year ago, scoring a game-high 22 points—while Swiggum notched double-double No. 9 in a Cardinal uniform with 10 points and a career-best 16 rebounds in leading Saint Mary's to an 80-60 nonconference victory over the Knights.

Kaiser got the Cardinals off and running, draining a 3-pointer on the Cardinals' first possession—and Saint Mary's never looked back, building leads as big as 21, 41-20, before settling for a 20-point, 50-30 halftime lead.

And it was more of the same in the second half, as the Cardinals built their lead to a game-high 29, 63-34 with 15:33 remaining, held off a Knight run that cut the gap to 16, 65-49, and cruised to the to the 20-point victory.

Kaiser—who scored 10 points in the first half and 12 in the second—went 9-for-15 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers en route to his game- and career-high 22-point showing. Swiggum and Quashingm Smith-Pugh (St. Paul, Minn.) each chipped in 10 points, while Swiggum's 16 boards bettered his career-best rebound effort by two.

The Cardinals shot 50 percent from the field (29-for-58)—including a 6 of 17 effort from behind the 3-point line—while going 16-for-29 from the free throw line.

T.J. Babinec scored 17 points and Josh Rathje added 10 for the Knights, who fall to 0-5 with the loss.

The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday, traveling to Duluth, Minn., for a 3 p.m. nonconference game against St. Scholastica.
