WINONA, Minn. —
McKenna Parent (Anoka, Minn.) did something Friday night that no other Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team has been able to do against Concordia goalie Andrea Klug—score a goal.
And the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team was far from satisfied with just one goal.
Saint Mary's erupted for four goals—including two from Parent—as the Cardinals handed Concordia its first conference loss of the season, beating the Cobbers 4-2 at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
"That might have been the most complete game we've played in a long, long time," said Saint Mary's coach
Terry Mannor. "We ran our systems very well—very well, and that was really nice to see.
"We are finally starting to play together as a group."
Klug—who had been unbeatable in posting four consecutive conference shutouts in the Cobbers' sweeps of Saint Benedict and St. Catherine—was no match for Parent, who rifled a wrist shot off the cross bar and into the net for her fourth goal of the season 14:04 into the opening period
The Cobbers would answer less than two minutes later, but the Cardinals again found a way to beat Klug, as
Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) beat the Cobber netminder with 13 seconds remaining in the period to give Saint Mary's a 2-1 advantage after the game's opening 20 minutes.
Concordia netted the equalizer at 7:07 of the middle period on a goal by Tori Davis—her second of the game and the two teams headed into the locker room after two periods tied at 2-2.
The deadlock did not last long, however, as
Kassie Lien (Grantsburg, Wis.) scored an unassisted tally—her second of the season—just 1:10 into the third period to give Saint Mary's its third lead of the game, 3-2.
And Parent gave the Cardinals a little breathing room, netting her second of the game and fifth of the season into an empty net with 27 seconds remaining in regulation.
Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.) finished with 16 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Klug stopped 21 of the 24 shots she faced for the Cobbers.
The Cardinals (3-1-1 MIAC, 4-3-1 overall) and Cobbers will go at it again on Saturday, squaring off in the second game of their two-game conference series at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m.
