Cobbers turn up offensive heat to top Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. — After putting up four goals in Friday's 4-3 overtime win over Concordia, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey coach Bill Moore was hoping for another offensive outburst in the teams' rematch Saturday afternoon.

And an offensive outburst is just what he got.

Unfortunately for Moore and the Cardinals, it was Concordia's offense that was in high gear, as the Cobbers erupted for three goals in both the first and second periods and cruised to an 8-3 victory and a split in the their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

"It was not a good day for us all the way around," said Moore, whose team fell to 7-5-2 in the MIAC and 12-9-2 overall. "We started out OK, but never really were able to keep the intensity high.

"You hate to have games where nothing goes right, but that's exactly what we had today."

The Cardinals got on the board first, as Nick Albergo (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Kelvin Walz (Woodbury, Minn.) hooked on a pretty tic-tac-toe play that had Albergo scoring his fourth of the season 3:30 into first period.

Concordia would answer getting back-to-back-to-back goals from Zach Doerring, Jordan Christianson and Andrew Deters in a two-minute span to grab a 3-1 cushion.

The Cardinals would cut the deficit to one, 3-2, on a goal by Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.)—his second of the weekend—before the period ended.

Concordia equaled its first-period offensive output in the game's middle period, sandwiching a pair of goals from Tucker Coborn around a tally by Bryan Kronberger to push its lead to 6-2.

Taylor Portner (Andover, Minn.) made it a three-goal game with his sixth of the season two minutes into the third period, but CC's Jeremy Johnson and Jon Grebosky would answer to put the game out of reach.

The Cardinals close out the regular season—and make a final push for that elusive MIAC Playoff berth—with a pair of conference games against Hamline next weekend. Saint Mary's will host the Pipers on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena, before the two teams head to Oscar Johnson Arena in St. Paul, Minn., for Saturday's 7 p.m. rematch.
