SUPERIOR, Wis. — The distance runners set the tone on Friday night, and the rest of the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams followed suit.

Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.), Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.), and Austin O'Hare (Rushford, Minn.) all turned in top 15 performances in the 3,000 during Friday's St. Thomas Showcase in St. Paul, Minn.

Newsum clocked a team-best time of 9:05.35, while Haley and O'Hare were right on his heels with times of 9:15.92 and 9:18.64, respectively. Jase Pater (Adrian, Minn.) became the third Cardinal to record his fastest collegiate 3,000 time—joining Newsum and O'Hare— stopping the clock in 9:29.81, while Andy Meyer (Tucson, Ariz.) chipped in a 10:15.84 showing.

And for coach Neils Anderson, the trio's performance was a sign of good things to come for the Cardinals.

Ross Kinderman (Onalaska, Wis.) posted a first- and a second-place performance, and Brandon Krogman (Owatonna, Minn.) missed the school record in the 600 by four one-hundreths of a second to highlight the Cardinals' showing at the non-team-scored event.

Kinderman broke the tape in 8.83 to win the 60 hurdles, while adding a second-place second-place leap of 12.78 meters in the triple jump. Krogman, meanwhile finished second in the 600 with his near-record-setting time of 1:26.05.

Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in jumps of 6.16 meters and 12.68 meters to place third and fourth, respectively in the long and triple jumps, while Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Wis.), Morris Dennis (Elk River, Minn.), and Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Wis.) added fifth-place efforts in the weight throw (14.77 meters), 60 (7.71) and 200 hurdles (28.44).

On the women's side, Maria Misurelli (Franklin, Wis.) and Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) put up second-place efforts in the pole vault (3.05 meters) and 600 (1:41.82), with Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) chipping in a fourth-place throw of 14.75 meters in the weight throw.
