GameDay PreviewMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams were good during the opening day of the three-day Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Thursday.
The Cardinals were even better on Friday.
Make that, a lot better.
Saint Mary's qualified four swimmers for Friday evening's finals, including a school record-setting performance from Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.) and collegiate-best showings from Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.),
Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa), and
Zac Finkelstein (Naperville, Ill.).
Not bad for a sophomore and three freshmen.
"What a great day of swims for us," said Saint Mary's coach
Eric Lindquist, whose men are sitting seventh after the second day, while the Cardinal women are 11th. "To get performances like that—especially considering three of our four finalists are freshmen—that's just awesome.
"Great to see Reese shave some more time off her school record (in the 100 butterfly)—and Grace, Brian, and Zac had monster swims."
Galewski, who clocked a time of 1:01.41 to qualify 12th in the 100 butterfly—breaking the school record for the second time this season—recorded a time of 1:01.66 in the consolation final to place 13th. The freshman also added a time of 1:06.70 to finish 20th in the 100 backstroke.
VanBeest, who opened her second conference championships by shaving six seconds off her MIAC-qualifying time in the 200 IM on Thursday, touching the wall in 2:23.34, posted the fastest 100 breaststroke time of her collegiate career with a 1:10.91 that put her 13th after the prelims. And in the consolation final, VanBeest held on to her 13th-place position, posting a time of 1:11.08.
And VanBeest and Galewski were just getting warmed up, as they teamed with Christina Weldai (London, England) and Ashling Meehan (Glenview, Ill.) to set a new school record in the 200 medley, stopping the clock in 1:57.06.
Mockler and Finkelstein certainly didn't show any freshman jitters, as the Cardinal pair put together qualifying times of 1:03.07 in the 100 breaststroke and 55.79 in the 100 backstroke, respectively. Mocker followed that up with a time of 1:03.33 to place 16th in the 100 breaststroke consolation final, while Finkelstein placed 16th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.65.
In other action on Friday, Janelle Mueller () finished ninth in the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 302.25,
Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) recoded a time of 56.96 in the 100 backstroke, and
P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) added a 1:56.62 in the 200 freestyle.
The Cardinal close out their stay at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Saturday, taking part in the third day of the three-day conference championships.
