MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — With their two record-setting performances, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team took center stage during Friday's second day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

On Saturday, it was the Cardinal men who stepped into the spotlight—led by Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) and Zac Finkelstein (Naperville, Ill.)

Tonda whittled five seconds off his best swim in the 200 backstroke, qualifying 13th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.37. In the consolation final, the Cardinal sophomore was even faster, cocking a time of 2:06.11 to place 14th.

And Finkelstein followed Tonda's lead—and then some—as the freshman not only shaved four seconds off his collegiate-best time in qualifying 15th in the 100 freestyle, but also broke the school record with his time of 47.98. The Cardinal freshman could not match that record-setting effort in the consolation final, settling for a time of 48.50 to place 16th.

Not about to be left out of the Cardinal qualifying, and record-setting, parade, Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) set a new school record in the 200 breaststroke, reaching the consolation finals with a time of 2:33.33—seven seconds better than her previous collegiate best. In the consolation final, the Cardinal sophomore touched the wall in 2:35.26 to finish 14th.

"What an awesome three days for Cardinal swimming and diving," said Saint Mary's coach Eric Lindquist, whose men's team finished seventh, while the women placed 11th. "The success these individuals had this weekend was a result of all the hard work they put in all year—there are no accidents, this weekend's performances were all well-deserved."

Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) chipped in a time of 2:23.19—his career best—to finish 23rd in the 200 breaststroke, while Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.)—who broke her own school mark in the 100 butterfly, while also swimming a leg of the school record-setting 200 medley relay on Friday—and Ashling Meehan (Glenview, Ill.) each posted collegiate-bests in the 200 backstroke, posting times of  2:25.10 and 2:36.95, respectively. Janelle Mueller () meanwhile, closed out her first conference championships by placing 11th in the one-meter diving competition with 308.15 points.
