WINONA, Minn. — For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team had to put in a little extra work on Friday.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg did not have quite the same happy ending.
A week after scoring two goals in the game's waning minutes—and adding the game-winner two minutes into overtime—in a 3-2 win over St. Olaf, the Cardinals surrendered the game-tying goal midway through the third period and had to settle for a 1-1 tie against the Auggies at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
"It's tough to come away with just one point in a game like that, because I thought definitely played well enough to get the win," said Saint Mary's coach
Terry Mannor. "We dominated play in so much of the game—and created so many good scoring opportunities—we just couldn't capitalize on enough of them.
"It's good to come away with one, no doubt about that, but it would have been nice to get the win—and the two points."
Macki Fadness (Eau Claire, Wis.) broke a scoreless deadlock seven minutes into the first period, as the Cardinal junior rifled a wrist shot that fooled Augsburg goalie Erika Allen and gave Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead after the game's opening 20 minutes.
The game would remain that way until midway through the third period, when Kayla Fuechtmann got open in the slot and rifled a shot past
Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.) to knot the game at 1-1.
The Cardinals had several chances over the game's final eight minutes, and into the five-minute overtime, but they could not get a second one past Allen.
Herrmann finished with 22 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Allen kicked out 29 of the 30 Saint Mary's shots she faced.
The Cardinals and Auggies hit the road on Saturday, heading to Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis, Minn., for the second game of their two-game conference series. Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
