WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's basketball team got a career-high 14 points from
Jake Rhyner (Apple Valley, Minn.), but the Cardinals could not cool off Concordia from behind the 3-point line, as the Cobbers pulled away in handing Saint Mary's a 74-49 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday at the Saint Mary's Gym.
The Cobbers knocked down three straight 3-pointers to open the game to build a 9-5 lead, but the Cardinals would not be rattled, just a 9-4 run of their own to grab a 14-13 advantage.
That, however, would be the last time the Cardinals would lead, as Concordia continued to toss up 3s, knocking down eight in the game's opening 20 minutes, as the Cobbers build thei lead to 19, 39-20, at the break.
Concordia drained two more 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes—giving the Cobbers 10 for the game—and did not led the Cardinals gain any second-half momentum in collecting the conference win.
Rhyner finished 4 of 5 from the field—including a perfect 2-for-2 from the 3-point line—while adding a 4 of 4 effort at the free throw line en route to his 14-point performance.
Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) chipped in nine points and
Zach Hinrichs (Lake City, Minn.) and
Connor Kaiser (Rockland, Wis.) each added six.
Tom Fraase scored a game-high 16 points—fueled by four 3-pointers—for the Cobbers, with Brandon Giese adding 11 points and Scott Flotterud tallying eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals (1-14 MIAC, 4-16) are back on their home court on Wednesday, as Saint Mary's entertains Saint John's in a 7 p.m. conference game at the Saint Mary's Gym.
