WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team used the "quick strike" offensive approach against Carroll in the teams' nonconference game Saturday afternoon.
And it paid off.
The Cardinals scored the game's first goal just 61 seconds into the opening half, and, after Carroll knotted things up in the game's ninth minute, they answered just 23 seconds later to regain the lead—a lead they would not relinquish in beating the Pioneers 2-1 at Ochrymowycz Field.
Janis Martinez (Las Vegas, Nev.) didn't even wait for the fans to get comfortable in their seats before scoring her second goal of the season.
Emily Loof (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and
Sarah Egbert (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned assists on the picture-perfect tic-tac-toe scoring play.
Rachel Van Sluys got the Pioneers on the board—and tied the game at 1-1—with her second of the season at 9:10.
The game did not stay tied long, however, as
Emma Schaefer (Roseville, Minn.) netted what would be the eventual game-winner—her team-leading third of the season—off another assist from Loof.
Aubrey Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) picked up the win in goal for the Cardinals, stopping a season-high nine shots. Carroll goalkeeper Sabrina Sieger stopped three of the five Saint Mary's shots she faced.
The Cardinals (2-2 overall) kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, hosting Augsburg in a 7 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
