MENONONIE, Wis. — As if playing on the road against high-powered UW-Stout wasn't tough enough for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team, the Cardinals had to do so in a driving rain storm.
And, unfortunately, the Blue Devils seemed to weather the elements a bit better than the Cardinals, scoring a pair of second-half goals in handing Saint Mary's a 2-0 nonconference setback.
After a scoreless first half, in which UW-Stout held a 6-3 advantage in shots, the Blue Devils turned up the heat over the game's final 45 minutes, erupting for 20 shots—including seven on goal—and a pair of goals to seal the victory.
Jenna Kizlik opened the scoring in the 49th minute, netting her third of the season, while Addy Maher gave the Blue Devils a bit of breathing room with her third goal of the year with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Abby Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) finished with eight saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Paige Meyer stopped both Saint Mary's shots on goal in recording the shutout.
The Cardinals (2-5-0 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, entertaining Bethel in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
