Cardinals lose heartbreaker to GAC in overtime

WINONA, Minn. — The last time the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and Gustavus women's soccer teams met, the two teams combined for six goals in a 3-3 double-overtime tie.

It was a completely different story when the Cardinals and Gusties squared off again Wednesday at Ochrymowycz Field, as the two teams combined for just one goal—that coming eight minutes into overtime.

Unfortunately, that lone goal came off the foot of Gustavus' Maddison Ackiss with less than three minutes remaining in the first overtime period, as the Gusties handed the Cardinals a heartbreaking 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.

The Cardinals, coming off a thrilling 2-0 victory over Bethel last Saturday, kept the high-powered Gustie offense in check throughout the game's opening 90 minutes—thanks in large part to the play of goalkeeper Aubrey Cornell (Columbia, Mo.).

Cornell—who made seven saves in recording her second shutout of the season against Bethel last Saturday—made a season-high 11 saves in keeping the game scoreless through regulation.

Cornell's biggest save of the night came with just over seven minutes remaining, as she dove far to her right to rob Ackiss of what appeared to be a sure goal.

In the overtime period, however, Ackiss gained her revenge, lacing a shot over Cornell's outstretched arms for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Cardinals (1-3-0 MIAC, 3-6-0 overall) are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Moorhead, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference showdown with Concordia.
