WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and UW-Superior women's soccer teams headed into Saturday's nonconference game looking for the same thing—their first goal of the 2015 season.
The search did not take long for the Cardinals.
Saint Mary's, which came up empty in its 2-0 season-opening loss to UW-River Falls on Tuesday, scored early—and often—against the visiting Yellowjackets, cruising to a 4-0 nonconference win at Ochrymowycz Field.
Emma Schaefer (Roseville, Minn.) got the Cardinals on the board 10 minutes into the first half, then added her second of the afternoon on a penalty kick in the 27th minute as Saint Mary's took a 2-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
A pair of Cardinal newcomers—
Becca Dup (Albert Lea, Minn.) and
Janis Martinez-Ortiz (Las Vegas, Nev.)—got in the act in the second half, netting their first collegiate goals to round out the scoring.
Aubrie Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) collected her first collegiate shutout in goal for the Cardinals, stopping all four Yellowjacket shots.
Saint Mary's (1-1 overall) is back in action on Wednesday, entertaining Luther in a 6 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
