Cardinals, Auggies tie 1-1 on late-period goals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Playing to a scoreless deadlock after the game's opening period is nothing new to the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team.

The Cardinals headed into Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg have been tied 0-0 after 20 minutes in three of their last five contests.

The Auggies are no strangers to goose eggs, either, as Augsburg came into the first game of their two-game series against Saint Mary's having not given up a goal in its last three games.

So it came as no surprise to Saint Mary's coach Terry Mannor that the Cardinals and Auggies were embroiled in another scoreless tussle Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Saint Mary's would score late—really late—in the second period, and Augsburg would answer with a late—really late—goal in the third period, as the teams battled to a 1-1 overtime tie.

"That was a great college hockey game," said Mannor, whose team has now played back-to-back overtime games, having lost to Hamline 2-1 in OT last Saturday. "It was one of those games where neither team deserved to lose.

"We have nothing to hang our heads about tonight—we played very, very well."

Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season with 0.4 seconds remaining in the second period—snapping the Auggies' 13-period shutout streak and giving Saint Mary's the one-goal lead heading into the game's final 20 minutes.

Saint Mary's goalie Tori Herrmann's (Elk River, Minn.) shutout bid came up nine seconds short, as the Auggies netted the game-tying goal at 19:51, as Valerie Whichello beat the Cardinal senior to send the game into overtime.

Herrmann finished with 28 saves in goal for the Cardinals—including all 16 in the second period—while reigning MIAC Athlete of the Week Erika Allen stopped 17 of Saint Mary's 18 shots.

The Cardinals and Auggies head to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Saturday for the second game of their two-game conference series. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
