WINONA, Minn. — Better late than never.
For Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer coach
Pete Watkins, there was not a better adage to describe his team's offense Saturday afternoon against Concordia.
The Cardinals scored with two seconds remaining in the opening half, then added a second goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, as Saint Mary's dealt the Cobbers a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
Saint Mary's controlled play for most of the game's opening 45 minutes, but could not break through until the waning seconds, when
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) headed a Chris Beiserdorf (Arlington Heights, Ill.) throw-in past CC goalkeeper Ben Giogoza to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at the break.
It was more of the same in the second half, as again the Cardinals bided their time, before
Garrett Grunke (Verona, Wis.) broke through, taking a perfect pass from
James Larson (Polson, Mont.) and beating Giogoza for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) did his part in securing the Cardinal win—their third in their last four games—stopping all four Cobber shots he faced for his third shutout of the season.
The Cardinals (3-2-0 MIAC, 6-4-0 overall) are now off until next Saturday, when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., for a 4 p.m. conference showdown with Hamline.
