Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Donny Nadeau

Cardinals survive crazy 3rd period to edge SNC

DE PERE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and St. Norbert women's hockey teams combined to score seven goals in the third period Saturday afternoon.

Including five in the final 1:33.

Fortunately for the Cardinals, four of those seven third-period goals came off of their sticks, as Saint Mary's picked up its second win in as many games, beating St. Norbert 5-4 at the Resch Olympic Pavilion.

"That game certainly had a unique ending," understated Saint Mary's coach Terry Mannor, who had earned his 100th collegiate coaching win in Friday's 4-3 victory over Marian. "We played with a lot of heart. Our systems were much better, and mentally, we matured immensely from Friday night.

"Overall, a very good start to the season."

After a scoreless first period, and a "ho-hum" second—in which St. Norbert's Reaghan Chadwick and Saint Mary's Jesse Cwik (Chicago, Ill.) traded goals two minutes apart midway through the stanza—the real fireworks finally began.

Saint Mary's got back-to-back goals from Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) and Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.)—the second goals of the season for both—to a 3-1 advantage midway through the third period.

Then things got interesting.

Jane Hannula (Coon Rapids, Minn.) pushed the Cardinals' lead to 4-1 with 1:33 remaining in regulation, only to have the Green Knights score twice in a span of 20 seconds—the first by Lauren Michael and the second by Kelli Sorge—to make it a 4-3 game.

Henderson netted her second of the game—and empty netter 17 seconds after Sorge's tally to push the Saint Mary's lead back to two, 5-3, only to have Chadwick find the back of the net 14 seconds later to once again make it a 5-4 game.

That, however, would be the end of the craziness, as Saint Mary's collected its second straight one-goal victory.

Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.) finished with 32 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Leigh Grall stopped 19 shots for the Green Knights (0-1-0 overall).

The Cardinals (2-0-0 overall) are now off until Nov. 11-12, when they kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a pair of games against Bethel. Saint Mary's heads to the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine, Minn., on Nov. 11 for a 7 p.m. match against the Royals, with the two teams returning to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for a 2 p.m. matinee the following day.
