Cardinals come up 1 goal short in season finale

WINONA, Minn. — If Saturday afternoon's season-finale against Carleton were a sprint, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team would have cruised to the win.

Unfortunately, Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown was more of a marathon—and the Knights were able to withstand the Cardinals' quick start and finishing kick.

The Cardinals scored first—just 14 minutes into the opening half—and last—with six minutes remaining in regulation—but the Knights would answer by scoring three unanswered goals in the middle 70 minutes handing Saint Mary's a 3-2 conference setback at Ochrymowycz Field.

The Cardinals did not waste any time getting their offense on track against the Knights, scoring the game's first goal in the 14th minute. Carina Friend (Colorado Springs, Colo.) took a pass from Shelly Wing (Verona, Wis.) and beat Carleton goalkeeper Elaine Sundburg for her first collegiate goal.

The lead, however, did not last long, as Hailey Mair netted the equalizer—and Nora Mertz added the go-ahead goal—in an eight-minute span to give Carleton a 2-1 advantage with 16 minutes remaining in the opening half.

Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) did her part to keep it a one-goal game, as the freshman made nine first-half saves and the Cardinals went into the halftime break down one, 2-1.

Nora Mertz, who scored the Knights second, first-half goal in the 27th minute, added her second of the game 10 minutes into the second half, but the Cardinals weren't done, as Emily Loof (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored her second goal of the season with less than six minutes remaining in regulation to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

That, however, would be as close as the Cardinals would get, as the Knight defense clamped down to preserve the victory.

Pederson finished with a career-high 11 saves—marking the eighth time this season the freshman has made eight or more saves in a game—while Sundburg stopped

Saturday's game was the season finale for the Cardinals (0-11-0 MIAC, 2-14-1 overall)—and the collegiate finale for seniors Emma Schaefer (Roseville, Minn.), Ellen Moran (Lakeville, Minn.), Marissa Dressely (Cottage Grove, Minn.), Aubrie Cornell (Columbia, Mo.), and Bridgett Leverich (Oswego, Ill.).
