Cardinals battle Bethel to 2-2 overtime tie

WINONA, Minn. — For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team netted two goals against Bethel Saturday afternoon.

This time around, however, two goals was enough to earn the Cardinals a point in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.

Jane Hannula (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored two minutes into the third period, lifting the Cardinals to a 2-2 tie against the Royals at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

"It was a night-and-day for us," said Saint Mary's coach Terry Mannor. "We did not play our systems (Friday night) and that made it very difficult, and today, we played our systems very well and we controlled the play throughout today.

"Give credit to Bailey (Wendt), Jane (Hannula), and Lindsay (Paschke), they really stepped up big time today—they were key to us coming away with a tie."

The Cardinals finally broke the scoreless deadlock six minutes into the second period, as Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) banged home a Kassie Lien (Grantsburg, Wis.) rebound for her third goal of the season—and seventh point in Saint Mary's first four games.

Unfortunately, as was the case in Friday's 6-2, conference-opening loss to the Royals, the lead did not last long—all of 84 seconds to be exact.

Bethel netted the equalizer at 7:25 of the middle period, as Wendy Roberts picked up a loose puck and ripped a shot between the legs of Cardinal goalie Ashley Corcoran (Red Wing, Minn.) to make it a 1-1 game.

The Royals' offense continued its second-period dominance, scoring its seventh second-period goal of the weekend just four minutes later on a goal by Megan O'Brien to give Bethel a 2-1 advantage heading into the third and final period.

Enter Hannula.

The Cardinal senior pulled the Cardinals even, 2-2, at 2:23 of the third period, taking a feed from Madison Thomas (Anchorage, Alaska) and beating BU goalie Maggie Straka for her second of the season.

Corcoran finished with 20 saves in goal for the Cardinals—including four in the overtime period—while Straka stopped 28 of Saint Mary's 30 shots for the Royals.

The Cardinals (0-1-1 MIAC, 2-1-1 Overall) are back in conference action next weekend with a pair of conference games against St. Olaf. Saint Mary's travels to the Northfield (Minn.) Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. showdown vs. the Oles on Thursday, with the two teams then heading to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for Saturday's 2 p.m. rematch.
