Cardinals excel at both ends of the spectrum

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams went long, and short, for their top efforts at the Carleton Meet of the Hearts Invitational.

Distance runners Jovan Newsum and Austin O'Hare went 1-2 in the 3,000 to lead the Saint Mary's men to a seventh-place team finish, while sprinter Becca Dup recorded a second in the 200 and a fourth in the 55 to lead the Cardinal women to a seventh-place showing.

"It was a really good day for our distance runners—both on the men's and women's side," said Saint Mary's coach Niels Anderson. "I saw some really good things out there today—I like we where are at as we head into the second half of the (indoor) season."

Newsum clocked a time of 8:58.75 to win the 3,000, while O'Hare was close behind in 9:02.22. Dup, meanwhile, stopped the clock in 26.75 to place second in the 200, while adding a time of 7.75 to finish fourth in the 55.

Brandon Krogman, who had his school-record time in the 600 broken by teammate Morris Dennis last weekend, turned in a 1;24.39 in the even to finish fourth. Ryan Buchmeier posted a third-place leap of 11.82 meters in the triple jump, with Luis Avila adding a sixth in the long jump (5.96m), and David Kemper (4.12 m) and Gordy Paulman (3.97m) placing seventh and eighth, respectively, in the pole vault. James Davis also put together a top-10 finish, clocking a 6.86 in the 55.

On the women's side, Maria Missurelli cleared 3.17 meters to finish third in the pole vault, while Alicia Berkenes (3:16.89) and Allie Thiel (3:17.69) both knocked more than seven seconds off their season-best times to place fifth and sixth in the 1,000, and Madaline Eichers uncorked throws of 12.42 meters and 8.77 meters to finish seventh in the weight and 10th in the shot put, respectively. Clare Siska also recorded a top-10 finish, breaking the tape in 1:04.39 in the 400.

The Cardinals are back on the road next Saturday, traveling to Stevens Point, Wis., to take part in the UW-Stevens Point Eastbay Invitational.
