Pethke leads Senior Day charge in win vs. Oles

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's Bridget Pethke (New London could not have scripted her final regular-season home game any better.

Playing in her final regular-season home game as a member of the Cardinal women's basketball team, Pethke poured in a game-high 18 points, added nine assists and hauled in seven rebounds in leading Saint Mary's to an 85-56 win Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over St. Olaf at the Saint Mary's Gym.

As impressive as the numbers are, the number that did not show up in the scorebook was 392.

With her ninth and final assist of the afternoon—a dish that led to an Alexa Huisman 3-pointer with seven minutes remaining—Pethke moved into a tie for the most assists in program history, a record that Lisa Janikowski has held since she graduated in 1987.

And Pethke wasn't the only one making the most of Senior Day Saturday, as fellow seniors Micaela Meredith (Bloomington, Minn.) chipped in 11 points and three rebounds, while Haley Trom (Hampton, Minn.) added seven points.

The Cardinals put the game away early, scoring the game's first 10 points and leading 27-15 after the opening quarter. Saint Mary's would continue to pour it on, using a 24-16 second quarter to take a commanding, 51-27 lead into the locker room at the break.

And the Oles would not recover over the final 20 minutes, as Saint Mary's outscored St. Olaf 34-25 in the third and fourth quarters, combined to ice the win—and remain in second place in the conference standings, one game behind St. Thomas, and one game in front of Concordia and Gustavus with two games remaining.

Along with the offensive efforts of Pethke and Meredith, the Cardinals also got 11 points from both Emma Schaefer (Roseville, Minn.) and Sam Jones (White Bear Lake, Minn.), while Schaefer also dished out eight assists and Jones corralled six boards.

Betsey Daly and Woo Bandel finished with 17 and 13 points, respectively, to pace the Oles (7-9 MIAC, 12-12 overall).

The Cardinals (13-3 MIAC, 19-4 overall) hit the road in their final two regular-season games, heading to Hamline on Wednesday, before squaring off against league-leading St. Thomas on Saturday.
