Saint Mary's GameDay Preview MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Led by the efforts of Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) and
Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.), the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams certainly put their best foot forward during the opening day of the three-day Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Make that their "season-best" foot forward.
Tonda shaved eight seconds off his season-best time in the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 2:01.61 to finish 19
th overall, narrowly missing out on reaching the consolation finals.
Not to be outdone, VanBeest trimmed five seconds off her best 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:19.88 to place 18
th and finish two spots out of a consolation final berth.
P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) led a quartet of Cardinals competing in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 22.98, while
Sean Ross added a 24.31, followed by
Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa / 24.39) and Nick Sawchuk (Rochester, Minn. / 24.95).
Andrew Eggersgluss (Mound, Minn.) also competed in Thursday's prelims, recording a time of 2:22.98 in the 200 IM. In Thursday's relays, Saint Mary's finished in 1:32.95 in the 200 freestyle and posted a 3:45.95 in the 400 medley.
On the women's side, Caroline Hoffman (Chicago, Ill.) and Sarah Fanning (Sparta, Wis.) posted times of 27.57 and 28.50, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. In Thursday's two relay finals, the Cardinals clocked a time of 1:46.55 in the 200 freestyle and added a 4:20.67 in the 400 medley.
The three-day event continues on Friday with preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m., and finals set for 6:30 p.m.
