NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field coach Niels Anderson expected to see some fireworks from his Cardinals during this year's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

And, thanks to performances like that of Morris Dennis and Bryan Ortman, the Cardinal head coach was not disappointed.

Dennis got the Cardinals off and running during the first day of the two-day event, shattering his own school record in placing third in the 400. Dennis—who earned his second All-MIAC honor in the event with the third-place effort—stopped the clock in 49.46, four-tenths of a second faster than his previous school mark.

Ortman, meanwhile, finished fourth in the long jump, uncorking a leap of 6.66 meters.

Fueled by Dennis' third-place showing and Ortman's fourth-place effort, the Cardinal men are sitting 10th after Day 1, while the Cardinal women head into Saturday's final day of competition in xxxth place.

Jovan Newsum chipped in an eighth-place finish in the 5,000, stopping the clock in 15:19.73, while Brandon Krogman recorded a ninth-place time of 1:59.07 in the 800. David Kemper and Gordy Paulman finished 11th and 17th in the pole vault (4.15m / 3.85m), and Austin O'Hare added a 12th-place showing in the mile, finishing in 4:30.26. Desmond Steward (6.21m), Luis Avila (6.13m), and Jacob Hagen-Erickson (6.12m) all competed in the long jump for the Cardinals, while James Davis chipped in a time of 6.73 in the 55 and Phil Emmerich recorded an 8.79 in the 55 hurdles.

Becca Dup led the way for the Saint Mary's women, placing sixth in the long jump (5.01m) and adding a time of 7.59 in the 55. Kynzie Smedsrud chipped in a 9.74 in the 55 hurdles, while Natalie King and Madaline Eichers posted throws of 10.65m and 7.97m, in the weight throw, respectively.

HEPTATHLON: Phil Emmerich finished ninth in the seven-event heptathlon, while Joe Gardner placed 16th. Emmerich placed third in both the shot put (10.96m) and pole vault (3.77m), while adding a fifth in the 55 (7.02), a 10th in the 55 hurdles (8.91), a ninth in the 1,000 (2:58.33), a 14th in the long jump (5.42m), and a 15th in the high jump (1.57m). Gardner was paced by a second-place performance in the 55 hurdles (8.43), and added a 10th in the 55 (7.12), a 15th in the 1,000 (3:09.50), a 16th in the shot put (8.75m), a 17th in the long jump (4.96), and 18th-place efforts in both the pole vault (2.77m) and high jump (1.48m).
