NAPERVILLE, Ill. — It's been a record-setting year for Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's Jovan Newsum (Glendale, Heights, Ill.).
The Cardinal junior broke the school's 16-year-old record in the 5,000 at the Macalester Bolstorff Twilight on May 3, posting a second-place time of 14:49.86—nearly nine seconds faster than the previous mark, set by Ryan Bickler in 2000.
Despite knocking nearly nine seconds off the previous mark, the new school record lasted just over two weeks, as the Cardinal junior was at it again—with yet another epic performance.
Newsum, in his final race of his junior season, once again shattered the school mark Wednesday at the North Central Last Chance Meet, clocking a time of 14:41.47—shaving more than eight more seconds off the school's 5,000 record.
"Jovan ran a great race," said Saint Mary's assistant coach
Ward Berndt. "For him to knock nearly 17 seconds off the school record in the 5,000 this season is pretty impressive—tonight's performance was a perfect ending to his season."
