WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's and women's track and field teams get one final tune-up before next weekend's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, as the Cardinals head across town to Paul Giel Field on Saturday to take part in the Winona State Warrior Challenge.

• The Cardinals collected a pair of first-place finishes at the Minnesota State-Mankato Maverick Twilight on Wednesday— David Kemper narrowly missed the school record in winning the men's pole vault (4.40 meters), while Jovan Newsum posted a winning time of 4:02.65 in the 1,500. … Newsum broke the school's 16-year-old record in the 5,000 at the Macalestser Bolstorff Twilight on April 28, posting a second-place time of 14:49.86—nearly nine seconds faster than the previous mark, set by Ryan Bickler in 2000. … Bryan Ortman chipped in a second-place leap of 13.57 in triple jump for the Cardinal men at the Maverick Twilight, while Desmond Steward was fourth (13.40m) and Jacob Hagen-Erickson (11.99m) was sixth. … Other top men's performances in Mankato included: Jared Wolt finished fifth in the 800 (2:08.42) and Austin O'Hare recorded a sixth in the 1,500 (4:14.57), while James Davis was sixth in the 200 (22.16) and eighth in the 100 (11.29), and Morris Dennis finished eighth in the 200 (22.96). Gordy Paulman chipped in a seventh in the pole vault (3.80m) and Luis Avila chipped in an eighth in the long jump (6.21m) and a ninth in the 400 (54.45). … Clare Siska posted a fourth-place time of 73.63 in the 400 hurdles for the Cardinal women, while Erica Thiel clocked a time of 19:50.49 to place fourth in the 5,000. Kynzie Smedsrud placed seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.01), Allie Thiel was eighth in the 1,500 (5:14.50), Natalie King was ninth in the hammer (38.10m), and  Molly Abraham and Olivia Kostueck were 10th in the 400 (68.43) and hammer (30.81m), respectively. … Dennis, Davis, Brandon Krogman, and Andrew Allemann shattered the school record in the 4x400 relay with a fifth-place time of 3:22.75 at the Phil Esten Challenge on April 22. … The Cardinals boasted a pair of all-conference performers at the MIAC Indoor Championships in March. Dennis shattered his own school record in the 400, for the second time this year, placing third with a time of 49.46—four-tenths of a second faster than his previous school mark. Missurelli, meanwhile, broke her own school record in the pole vault, clearing 3.35 meters to place second. … Ortman earned honorable-mention all-conference honors in both the triple jump and the long jump, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. … Davis, Krogman, and Becca Dup also collected honorable-mention All-MIAC honors at the indoor championships, with Davis placing fourth in the 200, and Krogman and Dup adding sixths in the 600 and long jump, respectively. … Davis set the school record in the indoor 200 at the UW-Stevens Point Big Dawg Invitational, stopping the clock in 22.71, while Krogman became the new school record-holder in the 800, breaking the tape in 1:58.74. … Dennis became coach Niels Anderson's first national qualifier, as the then-freshman earned a spot in the 400 at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor National Championships.
