MEQUON, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team headed into Sunday's nonconference game against Concordia (Wis.) having posted three shutout wins through the season's first four games.
And the Cardinals' defense would need to be at its stingiest against the Falcons, who entered Sunday's contest unbeaten, having outscored their first three opponents 8-3—including a pair of three-goal games in wins over Lawrence (3-0) and Lake Forest (3-2).
Saint Mary's shut down the high-powered Falcon offense through the game's first 45 minutes, but CUW scored once in the second half, then netted the game-winner in the sixth minute of overtime in heading the Cardinals a 2-1 setback.
Cardinal goalkeeper
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) was busy between the pipes in the game's first half, stopping all three Concordia shots to keep the game scoreless at the break.
CUW's Luis Loya broke the ice nine minutes into the second half to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead—an advantage they would maintain until late in the half, when Saint Mary's
Chris Beiersdorf (Arlington Heights, Ill.) netted his first of the season to pull the Cardinals even.
And send the game into overtime—for a second straight day.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, unlike Saturday's 1-0 overtime win over Marian, it was the Falcons who would net the OT game-winner this time around, as Dagoberto Diaz scored six minutes into the extra session to seal the CUW victory.
Levy finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, while CUW goalkeepers Killian Mielotz and Nate Yeager did not record a save.
The Cardinals (3-2-0 overall) kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Minneapolis, Minn. for a 7:30 p.m. showdown with Augsburg.
