Cardinals fall to UW-Stout 6-5 in overtime

MENOMONIE, Wis. — For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team scored three of the game's first four goals Saturday evening.

Unlike Friday's 4-2 win over third-ranked and defending national champion UW-Stevens Point, however, this time around, the Cardinals could not hold the lead.

UW-Stout scored 1:03 into overtime, as the host Blue Devils handed the Cardinals a 6-5 nonconference setback at Dunn County Arena.

The Blue Devils got things rolling on a goal by Karl Andersen at 3:46 of the first period. But all Andersen's goal seemed to do is wake a sleeping giant, as the Cardinals responded with three unanswered goals.

Landon Farrell (Rochester, Minn.) completed a perfect tic-tac-toe with Jared Johnson (Hartland, Wis.) and Kelvin Walz (Woodbury, Minn.) to get the Cardinals on the board at 15:10 of the opening period.

Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game, scoring his team-leading seventh goal just three minutes after Farrell's tally. Martin Gruse (Trenton, Mich.) assisted on Kinne's goal, giving the Saint Mary's senior his 100th career point.

Just over a minute into the second period, Saint Mary's pushed its lead to 3-1, as Chad Cesarz (Jackson, Mich.)—who scored twice in Saint Mary's 4-2 win over third-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Friday—tipped a Kyle Meeh (Fenton, Mo.) slap shot past UW-Stout goalie Spencer Viele.

The Blue Devils would not throw in the towel, however, getting goals from Jack Forbort and Riley Colvard in a three minute span midway through the second period to knot the game at 3-3 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

And things were just heating up—for both the Cardinals and Blue Devils—as the two teams combined for four goals in the final period to force overtime.

Alex Toscano gave UW-Stout a brief, 4-3 lead with a goal at 4:56 of the third, but Saint Mary's answered when Michael Cimba (Wilmette, Ill.) netted his second of the year four minutes later. Toscano netted his second straight goal at 11:36 to put the Blue Devils back in front, 5-4, only to have Gruse find the back of the net with just 3:31 remaining in regulation to knot the game back up at 5-5.

Saint Mary's was whistled for a minor penalty late in the third, a penalty that carried over into the overtime, and, 1:03 into the extra session, Colton Brausen beat Cardinal goalie Phil Heinle (York, Pa.) with the game-winner.

Heinle finished with 28 saves for the Cardinals—including 14 in the second period—while Viele kicked out 35 Saint Mary's shots to get the win in goal for the Blue Devils.

The Cardinals (9-6-2 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a pair of games against Hamline. Saint Mary's will host the Pipers in a 7 p.m. matchup at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Friday, before the two teams head to Oscar Johnson Arena in St. Paul, Minn., for Saturday's 7 p.m. rematch.
